personally I found sendmail a lesson in "loopy wisdom" a bit and postfix easier to setup and potentially more secure *duck*. Anyhow sendmail.org, postfix.org, google groups and google are your friend. Also the readme files teach you allot. The only thing I would say, is that you better be ready to provide your own support. Either that or have some darn good relationships with the guys on the support lists. When stuff breaks you gotta fix it. In contrast GFI has great support (so im told). I hadn't seen the last bit. In my personal opinion you are headed in the right direction as far as the servers your looking at. ISA 2004's application layer filtering will give you a distinct advantage over some of its "peers" in protecting your network from both internal and external attacks. Certainly, the latest versions of these software packages which you intend on are the latest and most secure we have been able to obtain thus far. When configured properly they will give you ample protection, in fact ive worked in many scenarios with just such a setup or variations therein. As far as exchange stopping spam, the new Exchange 2003 Intelligent Message Filter works to an extent but most people generally use some other form of mail gateway in the form of another win2k3 box that runs something like GFI Mail Essentials and Mail Security and the like. One other option is to also leverage ISA message screener and message filter with IIS virtual domain setup on another box. Another option, my choice, is to employ a Linux based MTA such as postfix or sendmail with spamassassin and amavisd for some really nice spam whacking etc. The drawback of this is that even tho its open source, you need to have the linux skills to be able to hack it up. Having said that it is very learnable, and a rewarding process. The box I built hasn't missed a beat. For spam solutions with exchange theres heaps of stuff at www.msexchange.org And for isa information, you cant go past the docs on www.isaserver.org HTH Greg Mulholland Krystaltek Solutions greg@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx www.krystaltek.com -----Original Message----- From: Naboth Semwayo [mailto:naboths@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Thursday, July 22, 2004 9:01 PM To: [ExchangeList] Subject: [exchangelist] RE: Contacting You Of List http://www.MSExchange.org/ Hi No disrespect intended to any of the List subscribers. I had asked too many questions on the list and I thought I would redirect this one. I have no doubt about the technical knowledge / expertise of the members in the group. My original message was: I need some advice. I have just been asked to restructure / redisign our network including making recomendations for new software. I have the Following ideas; Server: MS Windows 2003 Email Svr: MS Exchange 2003 Firewall: MS ISA 2004 Coorp Antivirus: Symantec Coorp Edition (The latest) What I am not sure about is content filtering and malicious code blocking and trojans and all those worms. Would ISA be able to stop this. I am still doing research on these products but would Exchange 2003 also stop spam?? Is there something I am also forgetting to pay attention to?? Dont worry about the hardware and budget. I would like if possible to stick to Microsoft and Norton Products -----Original Message----- From: Greg Mulholland [mailto:greg@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Thursday, July 22, 2004 12:42 PM To: [ExchangeList] Subject: [exchangelist] RE: Contacting You Of List http://www.MSExchange.org/ was there a question in your post or were you just looking for recommendations. You will need to a little more specific on what the restructure will involve, i.e. money, support staff, existing gear etc. No one will be able to give you any useful recommendations unless you know what you need to achieve and what resources you have to achieve it. In Johns defence, not that he needs it. It can be somewhat fruitless asking these sorts of questions off the list. If John is away for a week then you will never get a response. By posting to the list two things happen. You increase your chances of having a response to your question, as people like me (at the other end of the world) are awake when others are sleeping. Secondly, you will get a wider range of opinions and a "vaster" array of qualified answers. No doubt you respect Johns knowledge and "email approachability" as I and many others do but I can assure you there are many many knowledgeable and helpful people who can help on this list. Forgetting that, send us some information about your goals and objectives for the network you want to design and people will help you no doubt. As others have like wise said, I do not take question such as this off list. We help others on the list as we are able to and provided we have the time. If I were to stop and respond to anyone who asked for advice, I would not have time for doing the work I get paid to do. Please ask your questions on the list.
