I have always run the defrag to reclaim the space. Had not thought of creating
new store and moving users to it. That option does sound safer. How are you
bringing across the users and their mail to the new store? From backup? copy?

Right. I was giving you an option that would be way faster and less risky
than defrag.

Defrag rebuilds the entire database, page by page and takes away white
space. If you take it all away, it takes a lot of time to defrag as well as
to rebuild the pages on access putting an undue stress on the machine. As
you can imagine, it's very time consuming to walk through 16GB of data and
the time is compounded by the speed of your system (disk and processor
especially).

But if you insist on a defrag, a "known good" off-line backup is always
recommended as is doing it during off hours for obvious reasons. Note: to me
a "known good" is something that is tested and confirmed to be a working
copy.

Hi All,

I'm only curious about how trouble it is to perform this task and
any precautions before start the process besides backup or tips that needs
to know.
        Thanks,

Hermano

Since you need 110% of db size anyway to perform defrag, I've always been a
fan of creating a second store, moving the users to it, and then deleting
the original db. Seems faster, and much safer. That is of course if you
have the disk space on the same server. If not, then defrag may be your
only option.

I have exchange 2000 standard edition w/SP3.
My database is at 15GB used (2GB free). I have had the users clean up their
mailboxes, but have not seen a drop in the database size.
Exchange has been up and running since the fall of 2001. What can I do to
clean up the database?

Thanks
