Dear List

Exchange 2000 SP2 Windows 2000 SP2

I have a problem when users send a large attachment and it exceeds their
mailbox limit the user gets back a message for which I would expect. The
problem is that a copy of the users email sits in the badmail directory.
Consequently the badmail directory fills up with large messages. Can any one
shed any light on this please as it looks as if this is a bug or is really the
way that the mechanism should work. I appreciate that this is the mechanism for
a bad email address but not for a mail that has exceeded the users mailbox
limit. This seems to happen on all our Exchange mail servers

1. Checked the users do not have a restriction on mail message size however
they have a mailbox size restriction and will not be able to send when they
exceed their limit.
2. Please see error message below:

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

      'Clem Cull' on 02/08/2002 09:26
This message is larger than the current system limit or the
recipient's mailbox is full. Create a shorter message body or remove
attachments and try sending it again.
            <FELTXMB0003.BC.JSPLC.NET #5.2.3 smtp;450 5.2.3 Msg Size greater
than allowed by Remote Host>

3. When I looked at the mail in the badmail directory I found the message
found below:

From: postmaster@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
To: XXXXXX.yyyyyy@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Date: Mon, 5 Aug 2002 15:28:18 +0100
MIME-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: multipart/report; report-type=delivery-status;
X-DSNContext: 7ce717b1 - 1184 - 00000002 - 00000000
Message-ID: <kOTGkdmcd00001b43@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
Subject: Delivery Status Notification (Failure)

This is a MIME-formatted message.
Portions of this message may be unreadable without a MIME-capable mail program.

Content-Type: text/plain; charset=unicode-1-1-utf-7

This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.

Delivery to the following recipients failed.

Content-Type: message/delivery-status

Reporting-MTA: dns;FELTXMB0003.BC.JSPLC.NET

Final-Recipient: rfc822;clem@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Action: failed
Status: 5.2.3
Diagnostic-Code: smtp;450 5.2.3 Msg Size greater than allowed by Remote Host
X-Display-Name: 'Clem Cull'

4. I removed the mailbox size restriction on the postmaster account.

5. I ran message tracking and found that the mail never leaves the server. I
find that the message above is a little bit misleading (smtp;450 5.2.3 Msg
Size greater than allowed by Remote Host)

Any constructive comments would be appreciated.
