Let me clarify. 

Normal production day-to-day environment: Not supported, recommended or
approved.

In normal production day-to-day environment, you are supposed to use backup
software that is Exchange aware. This can be done either by using MS
NTBackup with Exchange installed, which allows NTBackup to be Exchange aware
and backup the IS, or a 3rd party backup software with an Exchange agent.

If you are taking the IS off line, there are other options available.
Normally, the IS is not taken off line except for specific in-frequent
reasons.
