Reading through the various posts on AV, there might be some confusion.

There are 3 entirely different Anti-Virus software that can be loaded on an
Exchange server.

1. Normal AV scanning, such as SAV 8.0 and NAV 7.x and so forth. This is to
protect the server itself. This does nothing to check e-mails flowing
through Exchange.

2. AV SMTP server. This is a product that would act as a go between between
the Exchange SMTP Server and the Internet. Only AV products specifically
designed to work like, or a gateway service, can scan messages going to or
coming from Exchange.

3. AV scanning of the Information Store. AV products that can scan the store
work with through the Exchange API. Only those products specifically
designed and documented to work in this way will scan and protect the
Information Store.

So, for complete protection, you need to have a regular AV software such as
SAV 8.0 to protect the server itself AND either a AV SMTP gateway or an AV
Exchange Information Store scanner.
