Advice with Journal Archiving

Hello,
i recently implemented the journal archiving, following the instructions
on www.msexchange.org. Since implmenting our network is showing signs of
slowing in performance.
My question is, what if any overheads does the functionality of journal
archiving have?
Also my MD has a mailbox of 1.35Gb could this also be a factor.
I would appreciate any help on this
