The regular expression for acronyms and abbreviations looks for HTML tag
starts and ends, so it may be possible that it misses a few occourences by
being too conservative wit matching. The acronym plugin is not all too
well written and thouroughly tested, it just happens to work in most cases.
Problems with colons in page names are rare I'd say, at least it seems
to work flawlessly on our demo site. On Windows it may make problems
with the flat file database backends, though normally all page names are
safely encoded there.
It probably depends on the setup, with mod_rewrite in action it can be
more difficult; but generally only slashes in page names cause headaches.
The InterWiki code (the only part the colons would have impact) is rather
clean now, and it shouldn't shorten page names at all. Database backends
once relied upon colons to tell text and binary entries from each other, but
not the latest versions.
