Is our school-aged English teaching so EXAM centered, that the real goal
of real communicative ability will not be easy to achieve. If we look
at books or exams from even a decade ago, were texts actually easier?
Could the 5 point Bagrut pupils write coherent essays or answer
open-ended questions better than the kids today?
If the exam questions are not being answered correctly, maybe the
problem has to do with a generation that is just not reading. I feel
the books were dealing with longer and tougher texts, when I began to
teach in school here. (Remember "Winning Strategies", a personal
favorite ?) It was always clear that the 5 point Bagrut would not be
passed by everyone. Not every "native" speaker kid got 100 on the Bagrut
then either. BTW lots of kids had reading problems that were never
diagnosed.
Do we know if our students are still learning English and will one day
be able to communicate, read and comprehend? Does the Bagrut even begin
to tell us that?
