Dear Coby -
1. Unseens are not the best way of testing grammar: unseens test
comprehension, not production.
2. Compositions are obviously a fine way.
3. Grammar clozes and rewrites, which have been thoroughly removed from
the NBA, provide excellent opportunities for grammar testing (I wonder
what the Machon Szold guys know about testing that we don't...)
4. you can of course explicitly test knowledge of grammar rules by
creating assessment items that require quoting these rules
(e.g., "what is the plural ending after fricative sounds?").
5. for extra ideas, browse
