I find that very interesting as I've been attending ETAI conferences since I
started teaching in 1981 and one reason I continue to come is that I (like
Jimmy) enjoy meeting my colleagues from SCHOOLS. I don't know what your area
is, but I've taught in the north, south and central and I always see
teachers from my past and from past conferences, hishtalmuyot and other
English teaching related events. I rarely find myself meeting private
teachers, although I have.
I've never conducted a survey, but school teachers must make up quite a
large percentage of the participants or the workshops I choose to go to
would be empty!
Last year was the first time I decided to stay at the hotel, found 2 other
women to share a room with (knowing it would be the only "vacation" I'd get
in the summer or whenever!) and I enjoyed my decision. Otherwise, I would
have stayed with friends or asked for home hospitality. So here's one school
teacher who just makes it a priority and makes an effort. I'm not the only
one. Just look at all the messages this discussion has produced.
As for the debate on the costs - the last time I presented, I had to pay and
I was very unhappy about it. I needed a computer because the workshop was on
how to make sites. Hard to do with an OHP. I was thinking about submitting a
proposal to present this summer, but I believe that I won't be able to
afford it and attend the 3 or 4 day conference. But I do agree with those
who suggest raising the price a bit to help cover costs.
I'm also very curious about the email (which I deleted) about the "moa'h"
convention - and how they managed to have such an attractive price which
included lunch. I hope someone can enlighten us about that.

Galia
