[etni] strike breakers

Hi All,

This morning I went for a walk in the park... my daily dose of exercise and
much needed mental therapy these striking days. Was looking forward to the
quiet, green and grazing ibex. Instead, I was greeted by busloads of schoolkids
and teachers on their yearly class trip. (jr.-sr. high) I suppose what got to
me most was the fact that one of the teachers was a past colleague of mine and
is a member of Irgun Hamorim.

Not wanting to interrupt, I waited till he finished his speech to the class
and then asked him if he wasn't on strike. His reply was, "Not today!" He went
on to explain to me that the majority of the teachers in his northern school
are Histadrut members and that the regional council decided to carry on as
usual. Of course, I told him that Irgun members cannot be forced into teaching
and they shouldn't be! I don't think he appreciated my words but I did give him
a piece of my mind, quietly but firmly. The encounter was very upsetting.

I'm not naive and I know that there are many teachers still at work (I'm not
referring to those in the Gaza Strip area under fire!) Still, it felt like a
slap in the face. I understand that strike-breakers could lose their Irgun
membership.
