".. if I give a spelling test, and a student has a ptor (exemption?) from
spelling mistakes, does that mean I have to accept anything that is vaguely
close to the correct sound of the word, or can I claim that in a spelling test
you have to spell correctly"
Thank you for all your responses. Most of you suggested using the words in some
way as opposed to asking the pupil to spell them.
My problem is with weak 9th or tenth graders. They possess basic vocabulary,
(skimmed mainly from TV) but cannot write anything. So I started trying to make
them learn certain topics, such as the numbers, members of the family, colours
etc., words which they know. They actually want to do it, and feel they are
gaining. But half the pupils have exemptions.
In other words I can't really teach spelling any more. (Vocabulary is much
easier to teach, there are a hundred ways of testing words, both orally and
written (that's where going to ETNI sessions helped!))
Oh well, I guess correct spelling is passe, a dinosaur of modern advancement.
