[etni] speaking english in class

sorry, renee, but i disagree with you. i think it is very important for the
english teacher to speak english, not only in class, but out of class as
well. that is not to say, that if i have to explain a point of grammar, i
will put on an entire pantomime so as not to speak hebrew - that is
stretching it a bit. i will explain what has to be explained and continue on
in english. the english that our students hear in songs and movies is not
enough for them to be able to mimic and speak english properly. (unless you
want your kids to speak in "rap"!) the fact that the students constantly
hear the teacher in english - in class and also in the hallway, on the phone
and in e-mails - and are themselves forced to speak english (because "i
don't understand hebrew"), gives a giant boost to their confidence and to
their speaking ability.
yes, i agree that the teacher must be able to speak english properly - both
with an accent that can be understood (although there are so many legitimate
english accents today), correct grammatically, and with enough of a
vocabulary to be able to use and/or understand and explain idioms and
expressions commonly used in the english language. unfortunately, that is
not always the case and presents a great problem. that is why my children
spent their school years (before high school and 5 point level classes)
correcting the english teacher or being used as a teaching assistant when
the teacher really didn't know how to say something in english. maybe the
ministry should send all english teachers abroad for a few years? just
kidding. i don't have a solution, but allowing teachers to teach english in
hebrew is not effective.
