One thing I've done in my classes is to REQUIRE students to keep their pencils 
moving throughout the whole journal exercise.  Start off small -- one minute or 
so -- and tell them that they must begin writing when you say GO and not stop 
until you say STOP.  Those who struggle are welcome to begin with something 
like "I don't know what to say about _________, but I guess I will have to 
think of something."  After a little rambling, most of them find some direction 
to head.  You can gradually build up to five or seven minutes.  That may not 
seem like much, but seven minutes of non-stop writing can produce quite a bit 
of text!  I hope this helps...

hi aviva,

i really like your idea. 

i've never done journal writing before, but i have started it this year with 
all my classes. i suggest a topic on the board, which they may choose to write 
about. they have a lot of trouble thinking what to write and usually stop after 
3 sentences. do you have any ideas how to get their writing juices flowing?


i am thinking of combining your idea with their regular journal writing. at the 
end of the week i will give them this opportunity. i agree that they need to 
vent and i think that we can learn a lot about our teaching from them. have you 
thought of any additional questions or ideas? i would appreciate hearing about 
them.
