I can't suggest a dictionary, but the very best, most user-friendly, 
encyclopedia is "World Book."  I grew up with it, and I got a set 25 years 
ago for my family (yes, I'm  ancient) and we love it.  The articles are 
very well constructed.  Fantastic illustrations--to this day I remember the 
diagram of a flower that I loved looking at as a kid.
