Cindy,
my gut feeling is there's another layer to it. Hebrew defies doubling a
letter - a word with a double letter (be it RR, LL, SS etc.) that
transliterates from English into Hebrew inevitably loses one letter out
(Look how Mississippi and Massachusetts spell in Hebrew...). Double
letters are organically alien to Hebrew-speakers. Hence, when it comes
to actively creating a double-letter combination, many are unable of
overcoming their L1 spelling preferences.
Does it make sense? Of course I have no hard evidence to support the
claim. I just "feel that way..." Realy. :)
Best -
Lev
