[etni] projects

Reported in the London Times last week: The association of independent (read
private) schools in England, of which there are approximately 600, voted
overwhelmingly against including student study projects as a significant
part of students' grades in their final year exams ( the A levels). The
justification given was that the system is vulnerable to abuse and
encourages plagiarism from the internet and other forms of cheating.

This is particularly interesting for the following reasons:
Independent schools are privately funded and therefore do not have to "toe
the party line" in matters of pedagogical policy.
In other words, they say it as it really is, without fear of reprisal!
Secondly, academic achievements in England's independent schools are
consistently among the highest in the country, so imagine what must be going
on in state schools!
