I agree with Adele's answer to this message 100%. Powerpoint will not turn an
interesting speaker into a boring one (or vice versa), but it can enable an
interesting presenter to make his/her presentation visually interesting and
more easily remembered by using more than one modality to present the
information. I think the issue here is not whether everyone should use or not
use powerpoint, computers or video, but whether the presenter who finds it
useful and enhancing to do so should have to pay for it. To me it's obvious
that a presenter should no more have to pay for the equipment than he should
have to pay for the hall in which he is lecturing. We should all want to
upgrade the presentations and expand possibilities for presentation.
I think that it is very important that no one see this discussion as "ETAI
bashing", or a demonstration of a lack of appreciation of all of the hard work
and many hours that ETAI volunteers have invested in our conferences. I, for
one, appreciate their contribution very much and have always enjoyed the
conferences - especially at the Renaissance. I simply see the equipment as part
of the cost of a professional conference which should logically be shared by
all who attend, with the help of contributions from whichever generous sources
we can find.
