Dear Aviva -
I'm afraid the word "insulted" is a bit too strong and hardly appropriate
when used by a teacher who believes so strongly in understanding and
compassion, about an opinion expressed by a colleague.
Besides, I was only commenting on a commercial related to a poll posted on
the list site some 2-3 weeks ago. It's the latter - the poll - that clearly
indicates that quite a few of us would rather be doing something else than
be a teacher, due to a variety of reasons.
The commercial in question is a visual rendition of just one of these
reasons.
You may have your own reasons for ignoring or disregarding many or all of
these reasons and continue to be a wonderful, compassionate and
understanding teacher.
You might just have missed the point of the poll which essentially asked
whether the pleasure and feeling of accomplishment of being a teacher
outweighs the pain, misery and humiliation of being one. In your case, the
answer is obviously affirmative - but 47% of the respondents seem to
disagree. Nothing doing: it's the difference of opinioin that makes the
horse-races.
Collegially -
Lev

To Lev,
I personally am insulted that you think this commercial would change
my mind about being a teacher. I actually saw this commerical and if
anything it only makes me feel better about being a teacher.
There are unfortunately too many kids who come from violent homes
or whose parents neglect them and so on.. As a teacher MAYBE there
is a small chance that I can reach and help this kid. And as for the kid
in the commercial a teacher will understand him more after meeting his
horrible father and probably be able to be more understanding.
I have had my share of obnoxious , difficult , unpleasant etc.. parents
and it only makes me a more understanding teacher.
We are not in school to teach subjects but to teach pupils (people!!)
maybe the story below will say it better than I have
. . . .
Isn't this what REAL teachers are all about.
