Hi all,
A number of people have told us that they are not receiving all of their ETNI
mail.
This most likely is because of spam settings that their Internet Service
Providers have put on their system.
One of the systems that appears to be blocking much of ETNI mail is Netvision.
We would like to solve this
problem, but unfortunately - from past experience - we have discovered that we
don't receive any intelligent
feedback when we contact these systems.
The irony of the matter is, that some Israeli Internet Service providers -
Netvision being one of them - were
put on the Freelists spam list in the past, because they allow spam mail to be
sent from their systems. This
prevented ETNIers from sending mail from those systems to the list. As soon as
we discovered this - in each
case - we quickly contacted the Freelists help desk explaining that these were
trusted members of our list -
and Freelists immediately understood the situation and removed the spam block
from these Israeli ISPs.
Fortunately, in some cases, there is intelligent life on the other side.
If you have received a lot of spam mail in the past, and suddenly you are
receiving none, or very little - the
good news is that your mail box is not being cluttered up by garbage. The bad
news is that it is coming at the
price of your not receiving a significant amount of valid email. For it is
impossible to block most spam mail
without mistakenly blocking out valid mail as well. In many parts of the world,
people are rebelling against
ISPs who are overzealous with their spam filters, and are either demanding that
the filters be removed or be
optional for them - or are changing ISPs.
You should check to see whether a blanket spam mail filter is being used by
your ISP, and whether its use for
your email is optional. If it is optional, you can then decide whether to keep
it on or turn it off.
In any case, the good news is that you can see ALL of the ETNI mail through web
mail at -
http://www.freelists.org/archives/etni/
This is the index page for ETNI mail according to month. You then choose the
month that you are interested in.
The direct URL for email from this month (May) is -
http://www.freelists.org/archives/etni/05-2004/
And you should still be able to send mail to the ETNI list, if you are
subscribed, despite the spam filters on
your ISP system.
Of course, if your ETNI mail is being blocked, and you are not reading ETNI
mail at times through the web mail
- then you will never see this message. Maybe not knowing is good news. And who
knows what other mail you are
missing.
(If you know of ETNIers who are not receiving ETNI mail and who may not see
this message, please pass it on to
them.)
