I've been reading the thread about pupils who were refused extra paper -
which reminded me not of Oliver Twist but of Kafka.
I took a look at the outside of the booklet and saw, in the lower right hand
corner, in Hebrew and Arabic, "The student received ____ pieces of extra
paper" - and of course, the cover of the exam, with the huge letter marking
the module, was printed especially for the English exams.
On the other hand, on the page with instructions, it says, "Students must
mark ALL their answers on the test paper only." Perhaps that instruction is
why some school personnel are under the impression that students cannot get
extra paper in the English exam.
I have two easily implemental ideas. One, the instructions should clearly
state that students may receive extra paper upon which to write their
essays. Two, we have complained in the past about the small amount of paper
that is presently given to the students for the essay. It is almost
misleading, because a student with large handwriting can fill up all the
lines and be writing less than 120 words - and the formal letter form alone
takes up about 10 lines unless you scrunch multiple lines onto one line.
Considering that the kids pay 25 shekels per paper, can't the Ministry
simply give another full page of lined paper as part of the exam??? That
would eliminate the need for extra paper for almost all the students. (The
extra paper is also a pain in terms of logistics.)
