David Graniewitz's "Linguistic Food for Thought") has inspired more of the
same, which I call "A Few From Down Under". My 11th grade native speakers, as
well as my twelfth grade five pointers, enjoyed a sampling of these:
Accountants tend to be underestimated, censors underrated and diplomats
understated, while teachers standing in front of a class are sometimes
[mis]understood.
A minor is legally underage, while a miner might be undermined. A chef can be
underfed , a dietician undernourished, and a podiatrist is generally underfoot.
Models are often underdressed (or even underclothed), while referees often
underscore. An actor who underplays his part too often will never become a
star, just as an author who underwrites will remain anonymous. Undertakers
complain that they are undervalued and underpaid for the important work they
undertake.
Of course, spies should stay underground, or at least undercover, and there are
many who would like to see rock stars undersung.
Try challenging some of your underachievers with an activity like this; you'll
be amazed at what they can come up with!
