[etni] gmulim and reading

No there is no connection between the two I just wish to relate to both
topics.

So teachers of 5 pointers deserve gmulim because they work harder. Well,
well ,well.
I think teachers of 5th GRADE deserve gmulim because they work harder.
Have you high school types any idea how much preparation goes into preparing
a lesson for 5th graders?
Flashcards, worksheets, games and other visual aides. As well as carrying
all this there is usually a tape recorder as well. I think teaching kids to
read from scratch is just as hard if not harder. Did you know that teachers
of Kita Aleph get a gmul for doing just that so why shouldn't English
teachers be the same?

As to reading, Maxine commented that she has never read a book in Hebrew.
When I was studying at Oranim, Elisheva Barkan commented that we could not
possibly understand how difficult it was for our students to read a novel in
English until we tried reading in Hebrew. So I did. It took me six weeks to
read a novel. It was no pleasure it was very hard work. I had to read every
single word and not skip bits as I can in English. I would lose my place and
not be able to find it again. A very frustrating experience all told. I have
thankfully, improved with practice and these days enjoy reading in Hebrew.
That first effort was after 17 years of living in Israel in a Hebrew
speaking environment. Think of high school students who are expected to read
novels after 4 hours of English a week over 7 or 8 years.
I honestly believe all English teachers should try reading a book in Hebrew
before asking their students to do so in English, just so as they can
understand what it is all about.
