I, too, would like to share the words of one of the examinees.
However, this is not a composition of "bloopers". Rather, it is
beautiful and well-written and I wish I could give the author credit,
but I have no idea who he/she is. After hundreds of compositions that
I could barely read, hundreds of kids who don't know the difference
between "success" and "succeed" and hundreds of kids who didn't even
understand the question, I felt privileged to be able to mark this
composition. I have not changed a single word or even letter of this
-- I am typing it exactly as it was written. This composition should
give us hope that there still are wonderful, intelligent students out
there and also that not all the good ones are looking to looking to
leave the country that many of us sacrificed what would probably have
been easier lives to live in. After rereading that last sentence, I
think this examinee probably writes better than I do!
"The current suggestion to teach students some subjects in English is
part of our sad plight. Its very essence sheds light on our nation's
deep identity complex.
"Let us ask ourselves -- what values do we want to instill in our
youth? Do we want them to grow up thinking that 'success' is a term
solely referring to money? Further, globalization must not blind us
so much that we will give up our unique self identity of which our
language is such an important factor. We are not America's
fifty-first state, we are a nation unto ourselves.
"Therefore, we should cultivate within our school systems pride in our
unique culture and heritage. When that happens, in my opinion, we
will have reached true success."
May we all reach true success as defined by this examinee. And may
you all have a wonderful summer!
Oh, and Maxine, it was three and a half weeks! And it was three and a
half weeks of very very hard work. Fortunately, it's over (for now),
I'm still married, my house is still in one piece (more or less) and
my kids still recognize me.
