Subject: the Meitzav tests
After the Meitzav test was given in our school, teachers had many
comments,
and we are curious as to the reactions of our colleagues.
First, the teachers said that the material was difficult and not
graded.
Weak pupils didn't even try to tackle the tests, but simply returned
them
empty. Furthermore, the listening comprehension was read so fast that
the
teachers themselves remarked it was hard for them to follow. Finally,
pupils don't take the test serioiusly since it's "not for a grade" -
which
is, perhaps, the fate of all standardized tests.
After all the expense of compiling the test, hiring testers to
proctor
them and then paying more people to check the tests, we think that there
might be more constructive ways for the Ministry to spend this money. I
was
told that, according to one newspaper, the results are published so long
after the kids have taken the tests that the results are useless anyway.
Since being implemented, have the Meitzav tests had any impact on
teaching?
These are some comments/questions we've raised that we think are
important to discuss and, if necessary, pass on to the Ministry. We'd
appreciate any input.
Hag Sameah, Linda
