Subject: testing literature orally
Hi everyone,
Here is a nice way to test your kids orally on the literature you've done.
Since most of us no longer have the time to sit with our students face
to face, one on one. and test them on literature.. (if someone does
have the time, I'd like to know how!!!) my staff has come up with a
fairly good idea. We have been doing this for a few years now and
it works rather well.
During class I take 3 - 4 kids for 15 minutes each (while the others
work on something else) and we discuss the different literature.
The kids have to bring a portfolio of all the work they have done on
the stories, poems, play/novel and book reports. 20 % of the grade
is based on the portfolio and the other 80% on how they talk during
the test. Although they must answer in English , the grade is based on
how well they know the material. I may ask one question which one
student answers and then another student will either agree or disagree
with him. It works out very well as there is a lot less pressure on the
kids because it's not just them and the teacher. And there is often a
lively discussion. We don't talk about all the literature but we touch
on the material which they liked the best. (or I feel we spent the
most time on).
Each pupil must also choose one poem s/he really liked and tell
the rest of us why and then at the end each pupil chooses the one
book that they enjoyed reading the most and give a 40 second
recommendation .
For the most part I find I can test all my kids in 2 or 3 lessons.
The kids like it and I love it.. So if you've been looking for a way
to test your kids in a different way and enjoy yourself.. try this. !!
Good Luck. and enjoy.
