[etni] fw: module A

Subject: module A

Hi all,

I waited a while before commenting on the recent Bagrut because
I wanted to compile some data first.

I have been following with interest all that has been said on the
list since the Bagrut. I agree with almost all of it.

I want to comment on module A. Since I teach mostly weak students,
this subject is very close to my heart.

I have %$%!@!$$ before about module A but this time it really took
the cake. My students came away crying from the test.

They will need to do Moed Bet, however, I don't know what good that
will do them. The test under its present format is totally
unsuitable for these students. It's not that the level of the language
structure is that high, it's simply too much to do in the time allotted.

Even with one of the listening exercises cut out, it's still too much.
There should be two exercises; one reading and one listening. We need
to remember that these students are WEEEAAAAKKK !!!!

If they could manage a test like that, they wouldn't be doing 3 pts.
Their results on modules B and C are much better. Where is the logic
in that? During the test, the students need to struggle with the subject
matter, not just the language. Many of the students are immigrants from
Ethiopia and they don't know what the !!!@$$#@@ text is about. I have
received answers in the past that if a special test is made for them,
then a special test needs to be made for all new immigrants. This is
simply not true. You can't compare a student coming from the western
world to a student coming from a third world country (as far as general
knowledge is concerned). They will continue to fail unless something is
done about module A. Right now it is a farse.

As to the data that I compiled, I gave the test to our better 4
pointers and they got 60s and 70s !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What does this tell
us?
If those are the results from our better 4 pointers then what do we
expect
from our 3 pointers???? I plan to Photostat all my data and send it off

to whoever will listen including Yuli Tamir.

I call upon anyone who has any sort of influence on the format of the
tests to make an immediate change to module A before Moed Bet so that
our students will have a chance to succeed. They deserve it.

All the best,

Nathan Singer
