Subject: goals of English teaching in Israel.
Doron (and all ETNIERS,)
I must tell you that I was rather shocked by some of your
thoughts on the goals of teaching English..
About your quote below:
"Do we consciously want to aim higher than (most of) the
pupils will ever achieve or need,"
I want to aim as high as as I can and I believe that most of
pupils can achieve a very high level of English. The more I
expect , the more they achieve. And I expect a lot from all
my students.. How dare you decide what they will ever achieve !!!!!
I have seen and continue to see MANY, MANY students who speak
English at a very high level. I also know that millions of
Americans. (being an EX I know this) don't speak correct English.
And millions more speak at a rather low level. I am not
teaching my students to speak like Americans (or Brits etc..)
They are learning the international language of English in order
to communicate with the world but also they MUST be exposed to
different cultures of English speaking countries.
WE , the English teachers of the country have the opportunity
to educate our pupils through the English we teach them about
life and the world.
All the best.. .
Thanks.. Aviva
