Dear coleagues,
I enjoyed reading the article very much. What most impressed me
was what one of the pupils said:
"I have a sort of dignity about myself that I didn't have before," said
Alycia Jenkins, a sophomore at Manley Career Academy on the
West Side. "My school has a very, very bad reputation ... But just
because you go to Manley doesn't mean you're not talented. We're
proving people wrong."
As part of my job as a counselor in Agaf Shachar, I visit the
Miftanim in Israel.
(For those who do not know what a Miftan is - it is a small school
for "drop outs" who have been collected mostly from the streets,
some with juvenile delinquency tendencies.
They are taught a vocation and get a basic general education and lots
and lots of support from a very dedicated staff.)
Last year, through the generous aid of Amnesty International, they
took part in a song and dance competition amongst all the miftanim.
Their final performance was in the amphitheatre in Ra'anana.
I cannot even begin to describe what this did for their self-esteem.
It was probably worth years of education.
We should never underestimate what kids can do - even those
who are so-called "failures"...
