Dear Sandy,
Sounds like a great idea and something id like to do in my
school too. However, I do have a drawback. Who knows
if the kids really read the books? What is to stop them
from just going to the library and filling out forms and
dropping them into the jar? How will you really know if
they have read? And if not, which we see too often,
what can you do about it?
What do you think?

to read in english, i was inspired to think of the following: (and i
already
have the school's ok!)
we are designating february as english book reading month. it is meant
for 3
and 4 pointers, grades 10-12 (5 pointers read without being bribed!).
the
idea is to encourage reading. the students can choose any book/level
they
want. after reading the book, they have to fill out a form in the
library
about the book, together with a slip on the bottom that they cut off and
foldand deposit in a large glass jar, also in the library. the more
books
they read, the more slips they deposit, the more chances they have of
winning a prize.
at the end of the month, we will have a drawing with three prizes (my
principal suggested movie tickets, any other ideas will be welcome!) the
winners will be photographed for the local paper and scho
ol website. i
would
like to do an activity with them that would involve the others too.
thought
of having them dress up as a character in the book they have read and go
intothe classes and say something. but what? and what if they don't have
a
character they can dress up as (for ex, baby sitters' club, etc.)
throughout the month we will put up posters advertising the contest and
encourage readers to make posters of the book they are reading.
i don't know if it will work, but i'm willing to try. my problem is that
it's difficult to get the other teachers excited and working. it's much
easier for them if i do all the work.
would like to hear your opinion, drawbacks, ideas, etc. all is welcome!
