Subject: Projects and Plagiarizing
One of the problems mentioned in connection to using material
from the Internet was that pupils copy and paste directly from the sites.
One way that I use to minimize or at least cause the pupils to be
aware of what NOT to do is to insist that they include a hard copy
of all material that they used from the Internet. I request that they
print the hard copy before they even write the first draft and have
them show it to me. The pupils know that I can easily compare
their final draft with the hard copy. If the hard copy is not
included in the final project, I take off 10 points.
The pupils receive the rubric that I will use to grade the projects
at the beginning of the process, so no one is taken by surprise.
This doesn't mean that the pupils write everything in their own
words but most of them make an effort to rewrite part of the
material. Considering that they copy and paste any research
paper they do in Hebrew, I feel that I've achieved something.
Almost of all my pupils have access to the Internet at home
and those that don't, have access in the school library (which
includes access to a printer for pay). I've found that they are
very keen to use the Internet, but I usually direct them to
appropriate sites since they get lost in the sea of Internet information.
I agree with all the teachers who have mentioned the fact
that we are teaching them skills that they are supposed to
learn in their Hebrew subjects. It is very frustrating to
discover that most of the pupils - even the good ones -
have to learn all of the basic research skills from the
beginning in my English classes.
