I did something similar with war poems and songs. Groups of students
had to find on their own a poem or song relating to war (following the
unit on Ireland in Summit). They had to show me what they had
found (to make sure it was suitable - neither too difficult nor too simple
and banal). They had to present it to the class. I gave them time to
prepare it at home and told them I'd be willing to help them if there
were any problems with understanding or explaining.
I insisted they:
1. use the overhead projector (matol) as this way the whole class
could actually read the poem without having to make 100's of photocopies/
2. pre-practise reading the poem sufficiently to be able to read it out
fluently and with correct prononciation and drama
3. explain the poem clearly and simply so everyone in the class could
understand
4. say something about the attitude of the writer to war
5. say why they chose it (even if it was because it was the shortest,
easiest
and simplest poem that they could find!) - what it meant to them.
I gave them a rubric assessment beforehand so they knew what their grade
would be based on. If you'd like a copy please email me and I'll send it by
attachment.
Have fun with it, it worked really well in my class.
Best wishes,
Judi Granit
