Subject: Editorial in Haaretz today - "Teachers get off your high horse" and
my reaction to it...
The absolute nerve of the editorial writer to ask the teachers to get off
their high horse. Has he (I presume it's he since he obviously doesn't have
salary problems) looked at the pay scale for teachers lately? Does he know
that the piddling 8.5% offered us is due us anyway because of salary erosion
(that might be the term for 'shechika' because I don't think it exists
anywhere else except in the teaching profession in Israel)since 2002? Does
he realize that the whole future of the country rests on its education
system and on excellent teachers? Does he realize that no one is going to
become a teacher? Does he realize that making the teaching profession a top
priority is a must because it's almost too late now. I've been teaching in
Israel since 1972 when it was an honor to be a teacher and the pay was
decent. What has happened since then? The length of this strike is
scandalous and it's due to teachers being the "niggers of the world" (to
quote John Lennon's song about
women). Shame on you...
This was my response to the editorial in Haaretz today telling the
teachers to "get off their high horse. My headline was: "get off your high
horse? I can't even get off my low ass..."
Will try to send the editorial.
