Subject: 7th grade heterogeneous classes
Dear Rachelle,
Although I no longer teach 7th grade , I have and I agree with
you. What you say is also valid for elementary school teachers too.
I have taught both elementary and jr. high and I " take my hat off "
to ALL the teachers who teach these children.. These are the most
important years of learning English , when the kids not only need to
aquire an aural vocabulary but also need to learn to read.
And let's face it, kids are all different and not everyone will 'pick up'
the language as easily as the next. Therefore teaching
heterogeneously in the lower grades is actually very detrimental
(not to mention ineffective) to many kids and what happens in
reality is that they arrive in high school frustrated and angry.
I agree that the policy should be changed. Elementary school and
Junior High school teachers work very hard and prepare the
students for high school. If they are not given the proper
conditions, we , the high school teachers suffer.
(But more important, the kids suffer !!!)
So all I can say is that I support you and I hope others will stand
up and be heard and that changes will be made. More hours
need to be given in elementary school along with less pupils in
each class and much more help for kids who encounter difficulty.
Thanks for brining up such an important issue.
Aviva S.
