I want to applaud the fact that many of the
tests comntained more questions than in the past,
which I believe is to the students' advantage. But
what about the 5 pointers? Their modules still had a
limited number of questions in relation to the length
of the reading materials. Thee writing assignments
were reasonable. I would love to read some of the
student's responses to the "G" essay.I agree that, in
general, the modules were fair, but I do think that
the "A" exam seemed to be more challenging than usual
and if you examine the "D" and "F" exams in light of
there target populations the 4 point level was
actually harder than the 5 point.
Oh yes, the topic of those particular unseens.
Well I must admit that I first I was so busy with the
actual WORK of administering the Bagrut: organizing
the tapes, testing students orally and giving moral
support that I didn't see the forest for the trees.
Then I received a call from my daughter asking about
how my day & telling me about the comments that she
heard on the radio concerning the context of the
unseens. Let's see ... dedicated teacher... works
without pay... gives of herself - hmmm - sounds like
the average English teacher to me. You know those
selfless individuals who test LD students on their own
time, share information & learning materials with
their colleagues, tape countless exams and who come in
sick on the day of the Bagrut (thanks again, Adina)!
Maybe I naively thought this was a subliminal
recognition of what we really do on a regular basis;
but in retrospect I think that using these texts, at a
time that so many teachers are worried about their
future in the profession, was in poor taste. Was it
done on purpose? Well I would have been more inclined
to think so before the latest details of the Ministry
and finances were revealed.
I hope that all of our students will succeed and
wish all of us a pat on the back for our efforts on
their behalf.
Best,
Ariella Kopels
