[etni] Re: discrepency between grades on Bagrut and "magen"

Greetings all!

Last year I posted questions to the list three times
about this problem:

If the "School Grade" reflects a wide range of
learning activities (projects, extensive reading,
literature, etc.), why should one expect it to
correspond to the results on a particular exam? Would
large discrepencies between the results of two
different grading systems lead to punishing the
teachers and schools as in the old Bagrut system?

When I met Judy Steiner at the Haifa ETAI conference,
I asked the questions once again. She informed me that
the Ministry of Education assumed that the results of
both systems would be similar, therefore this was not
a concern.

It is true that many teachers wouldn't do the various
learning activities if they weren't part of the Bagrut
grade. Thus, it does make sense to include projects,
extensive reading, and literature in an
alternative/supplementary Bagrut grade. Nevertheless,
if you set up the alternative system, don't punish the
people that follow the rules!

Doesn't the Ministry of Education understand that
alternative grading systems are just that:
alternative? If you grade different learning
activities, in different ways, you may end up with
very different results than with a one-shot exam.

The only question now is: how long will it take for
the Ministry of Education to recognize these
particular implications of the NBA? Until it does, we
are in an impossible situation.

Jimmy
