Another twist on this is a "dialogue journal" in which the teacher and pupil
develop a writing relationship.
This worked especially well for me in weak classes; it encouraged the pupils to
write and they could choose to write about anything on their mind in a weekly
entry. I, in turn, read their entries and responded to each pupil. I did not
correct their writing mistakes but I tried, in my responses, to relate to those
mistakes. In other words, if the pupil mispelled a word, I'd try to use that
word in my answer, spelling it correctly.
This was a little time-consuming but the class truly enjoyed it and it led to a
clear improvement in their "EFL self-image" and writing skills.
