Subject: copying copyrighted material
This has been on my mind for a while, particularly since the summer ETAI
conference when many speakers emphasized that their handouts were not
copyrighted material. If I adhere to the letter of the copyright warning
at the beginning of every book, I'm not going to be able to photocopy
any text whatsoever (well, almost). I certainly don't intend to copy a
whole book, but I need to have texts to use as unseens that the students
haven't seen already. My compliments to ECB's Choices for including a CD
of tests, but that's still a limited source aimed at the highest level
students. I guess I could write them all myself... but let's be
realistic.
Thanks and Shabbat Shalom.
Authors and publishers spend huge sums of money (and time IS money) to
produce books so that your pupils can learn. The law is very explicit on
this matter - it allows for a reader to make a single copy of part of a
book for purposes of private study. It does NOT allow the copying of
entire books, OR the making of multiple copies of extracts...
If you want to give your pupils texts to use, you have several choices:
a) buy a book that is meant for photocopying, b) get your pupils to buy
small booklets of texts, c) find texts that are not copywrited, or d)
write the texts yourself.
When you say "If I adhere to the letter of the copyright warning at the
beginning of every book, I'm not going to be able to photocopy any text
whatsoever..." you are trying to justify theft, in the same way that
many of your pupils would try to justify illegal copying of music off
the internet. What sort of example are you trying to set?
