Daniel - If I had a native speakers class, I would teach "The Outsiders" by
S.E. Hinton. She wrote it when she was 16, and it is studied in many schools
in the USA. It was also made into the movie. The poem "Nothing Gold Can Stay"
by Robert Frost has a focus in the book, and could lead to further study of
Robert Frost's poetry.
The book is about class struggle with a gang of rich kids and a gang of poor
kids. It is also about innocence and becoming hardened by life's experiences.
There is no sex, off color language, or drug use. It was my favorite book in
high school and I actually did a project on teaching the book for one of the
classes I took - which I would be happy to share. Plus there are tons of web
sites with lesson plans for this book. It is an easy read - and does not try
to paint a pretty picture with a happy ending. Here are some websites:

Please let me know if anyone is teaching this book or is interested in teaching
it. I really hope to have the chance to teach this novel one day.
