OK, my memory may be off, since I did go to school (NY public schools)  in the 
middle of the previous century, but I do have memories of doing "fill-ins" or 
something similar. Though the term cloze I only saw when starting to teach 
English here.  

That last sentence may be Yiddish syntax; please forgive me.  In New York  it's 
considered normal "native speaker" English.
