Write note to future self at Web site
The Arizona Republic - Jun. 30, 2009
They are called "journey" or "milestone" letters at Corona del Sol High
School.
They're the letters freshmen at the Tempe school are assigned to write to
themselves on the second day of school.
"We want them to think about what their expectations of high school are and
to start that process of self-reflection," English teacher Margie DiCesare
said.
Sammy Chagolla, remembering such assignments from his Peoria school days,
was inspired to write a letter to himself after failing to qualify for the
1988 Olympic Games U.S. wrestling team. Later, he gave his American-history
students similar assignments.
At Corona, English teachers keep the letters until the end of students'
senior year. The kids often are amused and surprised by what they wrote just
four years earlier.
If they took the assignment to heart, DiCesare said, "it was an opportunity
for them to document their personal history and create a snapshot of their
life at that moment."
Futureme.org, a Web site launched in 2001, gives the tried-and-true process
a new twist.
Site users have written nearly 805,000 letters to themselves and scheduled
them for delivery via e-mail on a date of their choosing.
