[etni] Where, oh where have the English teachers gone?

Hi All,
This is in response to Aviva's question regarding the "missing" EFL teachers
only a few days away from the start of the school year.
Ha'aretz has had a good series of articles in the past couple of weeks
regarding education and teachers or lack of them! The article posted on ETNI
this morning just showed we're not alone with the problem. In the US, it's
science and math teachers who are scarce.
Quite honestly, I'm not a wee bit surprised. Many EFL teachers who came to
Israel in the 60's and 70's have reached retirement age...or are almost there.
(I'm counting the days...) Others pulled out for high tech and other
better-paid and/or less stressful jobs. Some new teachers test the waters, dip
their toes or maybe get knee-deep and RUN! My own kids swear they'll never walk
the Ministry road.
So, with only 4 shopping days left till the kids file into the classrooms
(I'm not counting Shabbat despite the open malls), I get the feeling some
classes will be teacherless.
Laurie
PS ORT Abu Krinat is still looking for full-time EFL teacher. (See my Mon. ETNI
Digest posting for details)
