[etni] When are points deducted for capitlisation or lack of it

I have numerous private students and have an issue I need some clarification on 
as I don't teach in the school system.
In the NBA are points taken off if a student gives an example from a text, 
essentially a quotation, and she writes the answer with a capital letter, even 
though in the text those few words were in the middle of a sentence and were 
therefore not capitalized.

I have always taught that you capitalize the beginning of a sentence.

Any comments would be welcome
