There's money to be made in them thar English classes
Haaretz - February 22, 2008

English Teachers can make lots of money in Israel, according to U.K.-born
linguist Helen Doron, who runs a multi-million dollar international empire
of children's learning programs. To be sure, she doesn't mean by working for
the Education Ministry - which she says has reached "a dead end."

Rather, the source of wealth lies in her unique educational product,
combining early exposure to English, language reinforcement and drama. Doron
and her 20-odd employees, working in what looks like a white mansion atop a
lush green hill in the Galilee, pack and dispatch the various Helen Doron
teaching products for English and math to 23 countries, including Israel.
She says teachers at Helen Doron can expect to earn significantly more than
the notoriously low salaries the ministry offers. Most learning groups are
comprised of only a few children, as opposed to the school system's 40-pupil
classrooms.

The origins for her method, she says, go back to her decision in 1985 to
enroll her daughter - who was then four years old - in violin lessons. "We
enrolled her in a course that taught the Mother-Tongue Method by violinist
Shinichi Suzuki, which uses hearing rather than notes to teach very small
children how to play music," Doron recalls.

"I remember thinking: 'what's wrong with us? Here we have a method for
teaching music as a mother tongue, yet we have no such method of teaching
language.'"
