I had a student (only 1 in 20 years of teaching in Israel) who never came to
class, in any subject, except for tests. I spoke to her before the end of the
yud bet year and she said that she just couldn't bring herself to come to
class. I asked her why she hadn't gone to the Democratic School and she
replied that it was what she had wanted to do but her parents couldn't afford
it. This student had an older brother who brought her the Jerusalem Post each
night and she read it from first to last page with the dictionary at her side.
I told her that her class mark would be according to the same percentages as
everyone else in the class but that just between us, I would give her as a
magen grade whatever she got in the magen test. Her magen test grade was the
highest in the class. Yes, I believe in sticking to the rules - but to every
rule there is an exception. And I do believe that there are the exceptional
students out there, albeit very rarely, who deserve our extra consideration.
