[etni] The right to sit 5 point bagrut

Shalom

A pupil who is at the level of 5 points should not under any circumstances be made to take a 4 point exam. You are playing with fire if you encourage or tell your pupils to take the exam with a pinch of salt and later do it externally (he sits for the exam at his school) as word gets around FAST, the kids talk with their friends and you may end up with an epidemic. My honest opinion and suggestion is to let your school English Inspector take care of this problem. Yes there are 2 sides that need to be heard and it is part of our job-description to be objective in such cases.

We have a teacher's aide in our school who is doing a year of
volunteer work who did her 5 pt Bagrut with a very low school grade
because of siminlar problems to your private pupil. She just did it
externally this Moed Horef and said it was really easy because her
English is excellent- so that's what your kid can do: do the bagrut in
order to get his school certificate and then re-do it afterwards.

Dear List,

I urgently need a reply to this question.

I have a private student who is in a 5 point class. He has done all his
exams and two projects - the first was rejected because he wrote about Hugh
Heffner, the creator of Playboy magazine.

Unfortunately the boy is rather unorthodox; he has created his own business, plays league football, coaches tennis, and also has a part-time job. As you
can imagine, he misses more classes than he is allowed, but makes up the
work he misses. For this reason, his teacher refuses to put him in for 5
points, although he is definitely a 5 point student. She says that if he
sits the exam, his magen grade will be zero. She will, however, allow him
to sit the 4 point exam, but this will cost him his full Bagrut, because of the missing point. If she gives him zero, he will not be able tomake up the
extra point while he is in the army.

Far be it from me to wish to undermine his teacher; God knows that a
teacher's life is hard enough, without this type of hassle. However I am
wondering whether the boy isn'thave able to take a 'magen' test, and use
this mark, plus his exam results and project mark, in order to have a magen
grade. It does seem to me that his teacher is being overly harsh. Of
course, I only have his side of the story, but I have seen his two projects,
definitely his own work, beautifully researched and excellently and
enthusiastically presented orally.

Does anyone out there have an official answer for me?

Thanks,

Jennifer Byk
