I agree that we sometimes feel embarrassed when honoured in public for
our efforts, but I also think that we feel a certain sense of
gratification at having our efforts recognized.

Too often, we feel that we are working in a vacuum. And we are consumed
in trying to deal with the issues of the day: the NBA; discipline
problems; dismissal slips; suggested reforms; etc.

Sometimes we lose sight as to why we decided in becoming a teacher in
the first place. Or lose faith in our ability to make a difference.

Thus, in suggesting this new section of ETNI - "Teacher of the Week" -
we wanted not only to honour teachers for their effort, but also enable
us all to share our teaching experiences (this time, our more positive
teaching experiences) with each other, and in this way possibly raise
our morale just a bit and bring the ETNI family closer.

We may be wrong. The success of new initiatives, such as this one, can
be easily measured. If we do receive a lot of input from the field with
recommendations for the "Teacher of the Week", then it will appear that
the ETNI community regards this as a valuable contribution to the ETNI
site. If we receive little, or no input, then it will appear that this
suggestion does not successfully meet any real need and will be
scrapped.

In any case, thanks for you input on this subject. We are constantly
trying to make the ETNI site a better site for the English teaching
community. The more input we receive, the better our chances for
succeeding in this endeavour.

David
