[etni] Tape recorders ??

Hi fellow teachers..
Well the May ,2009 English bagrut is over and like all of you I too
breathe a sigh of relief.. Exhausted from running the day (as a
coordinator) , I feel obligated to share a small interlude from this hectic
day and if you think hard enough you'll understand my purpose in writing
(dafka ??)about this incident.
After spending weeks searching for and eventually finding tape recorders
which have built in microphones and making sure each pupil who needs it has
one, I ask the kids to buy their own cassettes ( what's that ??) . Then on
the day of the bagrut they do the test and then record their answers.(having
gone through a trial run) Right, well,today I was called in by a
distraught proctor ( an elderly woman in her 70s) and a very anxious 17
year old boy, (after NO ONE else could figure out the problem ) who
explained to me "" We have been trying for 10 or 15 minutes to record but
this tape recorder just doesn't work !!" ( Now I had personally checked each
and every one of these ancient machines and believe it or not , they did
work )
So I looked at the machine (so old and decrepit !!) for about 20 seconds and
said "" You might try plugging it in . "" AND yes, it did work after this
!!
Now of course if it had been a MP3 or MP4 .. I would never have been called
in.. However, we all know that these newfangled gadgets are just not used in
our Bagrut exams !!
Well no time or energy to comment on the exams .What more can I say.. ??

PS Just got a call from a mother with a daughter in 9th grade asking if I
know of a teacher who can help her daughter .. not in English ( because
she's ok there) but in doing unseens . Gotta think about that one.
"It must be remembered that the purpose of education is not to fill the
minds of students with facts?it is to teach them to think.?
