Where are all the English teachers?

Have you ever been to an ETAI convention? In the Jerusalem one, the average
age is pretty old.

It's hard to find young English teachers. Where I teach, the high school
English staff is 55 plus, though every year, we keep bringing in some younger
teachers. They don't stay. This year we need one for a couple of classes; I
don't know how we'll manage. I heard that the top high school in the area also
needs an English teacher for a couple of classes.

We must get the "hidden English speakers" into teaching English. Those
hidden ones are "our kids" who grew up with English at home and learned perfect
Hebrew in school and from friends. But if they're like mine, they didn't learn
much English at school until Bagrut, sometimes as early as the 10th grade, so
they claim that they "don't know English" well enough.
