David your letter was inspiring!  I have spoken
 to veteran teachers in 
Israel who explained that the Bagrut exam used to
 be given once and only at 
the end of the 12th grade.  In spite of (or as a
 result of) this, student 
achievements were equal if not higher than
 today's modular Bagrut.  The ...
   
  The NBA has turned English teaching into Bagrut preparation.  We have to 
spend two years now with the five requirements, three written tests, one oral 
and the project.  Some schools start in the 10th and require two levels "just 
to be safe."  It's a total waste of time, effort and money.
   
  Go back to the old one test method, but add a supplementary for upgrading 
after graduation.  Stop the project, and push for better native language 
skills.  That's in composition, grammar etc.  Let the history department do a 
research project which includes one or two English sources in coordination with 
the English department.
   
  We are foreign language teachers not even second language!  Let's get back to 
teaching English!
